Legacy Leadership: A Model for Campus Succession Planning
In the fall of 2007, the Leadership Development Center, in conjunction with the Offices of the Associate Superintendents, created the district's first campus succession planning model entitled Legacy Leadership. The primary implementation of the model, which was presented to the AISD Board of Trustees and subsequently approved shortly thereafter, began in the summer of 2008 with the district's first School Leadership Team Institutes for all elementary, middle and high school leadership and administrative teams. (For more information on the School Leadership Team Institutes, click here.) The formal stages of implementation are scheduled to begin in the fall of 2008. The AISD Legacy Leadership Model is based on the belief that, from the first day of their appointment, leaders need to give serious thought to the leadership capacity they will build in themselves and in others, as well as to the legacies they will leave to their school, the district, and the educational enterprise broadly defined. This goal is anchored in three ways: through a staged approach to leadership development; through five key ideas that permeate formal preparation and informal socialization; and through the establishment of leadership development schools. The overall aim of the project is aligned to our organizational mission: to develop a cohesive leadership development initiative that increases both the quality and quantity of school leaders and produces a generation of leaders who can advance education in the 21st century.
